- Ensure Literacy, Language and Numeracy are part of the organisation's learning and development strategy
- Identify what learning and development needs your workforce requires by carrying out a needs audit
- Ensure managers are aware of the impact of Literacy, Language and Numeracy skills and understand and recognise the value in the workplace
- Build initial assessments into induction programmes with the commitment to fill skills gaps in work time, with union support, where relevant
- Stress that learning and development are open to all
- Create and encourage a supportive culture for all the people in the organisation
- Promote the programmes using positive descriptions and plain English to encourage less confident people to participate
- Provide taster / fun sessions as an introduction to break down the barriers to learning that inhibit people from participating
- Work with specialist Literacy, Language and Numeracy provider - ensure that the provider understands the organisation and involves the relevant people at all stages of the programme
- Monitor learning uptake / access and the effectiveness of the programmes
- Ensure that procedures are set up to evaluate the impact and relevance of the programmes on the organisation
