Employers urged to recognise valuable contribution temporary workers make to UK business 5/06/2006

Investors in People is today urging employers to recognise the important contribution temporary workers make to UK business and treat them as a valuable addition to the workforce rather than simply a short-term solution to a resourcing problem

At the start of National Temporary Workers Week (5-9 June), Investors in People is advising employers to invest time in managing and motivating temp workers so they are able to contribute to achieving business goals from the outset. This could include better specification of responsibilities, greater commitment to inductions and ensuring temporary workers are effectively supported in their role.

June Williams, Director, Investors in People, commented:

"Temporary workers are an essential part of the workforce and every week 1.2 million temps help to keep the UK economy moving. Despite this, employers frequently see temporary workers as simply as a short-term solution and fail to make the most of the skills and experience they bring to an organisation. Getting the most from temporary workers does require effective planning on the part of the employer and also some time investment. However, managed effectively, and treated as an integral part of the workforce, they can make a significant contribution to a business's bottom-line."

There are now approx 1.477 million2 registered temps in the UK, making up nearly 6%2 of the workforce. Turnover in temporary recruitment was £20.3 billion in 2003-20041.

Investors in People recommends a number of steps to help employers maximise the contribution temporary workers can make to their business, from enhanced workforce planning (for example, frequent skills audits and development plans) to specific tactical measures such as the 'trainstorm' technique, which involves a whistle-stop tour of company principles, customer service standards and key 'dos and don'ts' to give temporary workers a rapid induction into the organisation.
